CHINA GROVE, N.C. — Macaw Plumbing & Tankless, a family-owned plumbing company serving the greater China Grove, Mooresville, Concord, and Kannapolis area, has joined as a program partner with HopeKids North Carolina — a nonprofit organization that provides ongoing events, activities, and a support community for families with children facing cancer and other life-threatening medical conditions.
The Macaw Plumbing & Tankless logo now appears on the HopeKids North Carolina chapter partner page at hopekids.org/north-carolina, alongside a growing network of organizations across the Charlotte region committed to surrounding these families with hope.
HopeKids serves families who have a child with a life-threatening medical condition by offering an ongoing program of events that gives them something positive to look forward to, rather than focusing on the emotional toll of their diagnosis. Instead of a calendar filled with clinic appointments and hospital stays, families can anticipate outings like movies, sporting events, theater shows, and concerts — creating precious opportunities for the entire family to bond during a time that could otherwise pull them apart. All events are free of charge.
The North Carolina chapter was established in March 2023, making it one of the organization's newest — and most personal — connections for the Macaw team. The chapter's Executive Director, Brittany Ruechel, is no stranger to Macaw Plumbing. She is also a customer, and she left the company a five-star Google review — calling Macaw a company that "leads with kindness, knowledge, and integrity." That kind of firsthand trust made partnering with her chapter an easy decision for Jonathan and Sierra Johns.
"When Brittany reached out about HopeKids, it was an immediate yes," said Jonathan Johns, owner and licensed master plumber at Macaw Plumbing & Tankless. "We already knew her, and we already believed in what she was building here in North Carolina. What HopeKids does for these families is exactly the kind of thing we want to be part of."
HopeKids has three unique programs designed to bring hope and support to families with children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. The HopeDay Program provides a variety of exciting in-person events — sporting events, theater shows, concerts, and museum visits — while the HopeCommunity Program offers intimate gatherings like parent date nights, hospital visits, and coffee chats designed to connect families with others facing similar challenges. For those who can't attend in person, a Virtual Program ensures all families have something to look forward to, with events like book clubs, magic shows, crafts, and cooking classes that can be attended from home or even a hospital bed.
Nationally, HopeKids serves over 5,800 families, impacting the lives of nearly 30,000 individuals across seven chapters and a virtual program. The North Carolina chapter is still growing, and local business support is critical to expanding its reach.
The partnership reflects values the Johns family has woven into Macaw from the beginning. The company's own "Serving Hands" initiative provides free monthly plumbing repairs to families in need throughout the area. Supporting HopeKids is an extension of that same conviction — that a business has a responsibility to the community it serves.
"We named this company after our five kids," Johns said. "Every time we show up for another family, we're doing it with our own children in mind. That's what HopeKids gets — they understand what it means to put family first."
We have dear friends who have benefited directly from Hope kids events. They have shared how these events do bring so much joy to their family as they navigated a difficult season. It makes this organization that much more important for us to support seeing first hand how much the families need these events of hope.
According to HopeKids' own survey data, 97% of participating families say their HopeKid has a more positive outlook on the future because of the program, and 98% say HopeKids provides an environment where their child is accepted for who they are. The organization carries a 98.23% Charity Navigator Transparency Score and directs 87% of total revenue directly to program expenses — the kind of financial accountability that matters to donors and sponsors alike.
Macaw Plumbing & Tankless encourages other businesses in the Mooresville, China Grove, Salisbury, and Concord area to explore a partnership with HopeKids North Carolina.
On average across all HopeKids chapters, it costs just $50 per month to provide an unlimited calendar of events for one family for an entire year. For local businesses looking for a meaningful, well-run organization to support, the barrier to entry is low — and the impact is real.

"There's no shortage of good businesses in this area that care about their neighbors," Johns said. "If any of them are looking for somewhere to put that care to work, I'd point them straight to HopeKids. It's a cause worth showing up for."
